What a Day…

Wow, what a day. Gave me a good taste of what to expect at work. :)

Started out pretty good. Got out of going to the new website’s training gathering (actually, at my request) since I have a bunch of MacBooks and iBooks to image and prepare for the mobile laptop carts.

Then, I few faculty members showed up all at once to pick up their new laptops. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem but I didn’t realize they were going to show up at the same time instead of scheduling a time, per my original email to them. Depending on how much stuff they have on their old machines, it takes an hour or two to migrate to their new ones. A couple of them, while very nice, acted like it shouldn’t take that long and “could they wait.” This meant standing behind me while I was flying around the office between imaging the other machines, adding student accounts, running over to the Middle School building to check on the smartBoard installations, etc.

So, I took a deep breath and got their laptops finished (after hearing one ask “why can’t I keep my old one too? I won’t ask you any questions about it!” That’s another story.)

Apple’s SUSHad a quick lunch with Sha and the kids then back to work for an hour and a half of different website training (couldn’t get out of it this time.) So, I sat there, not really learning anything because the site manager didn’t give us two network guys our passwords so we couldn’t do anything. So I spent the entire time researching Software Update Server for the Macs as I have a feeling that the business-class cable modem gets absolutely swamped when you have 200+ Macs running Software Update at the same time. When I asked my manager about it, he said not really and left it at that. I deduced it had to do with the fact that NO ONE ever runs SU. Could be a not so good thing.

Ended that training and ran back upstairs to finish converting one of the laptops over. This particular faculty member is moving from a PowerBook G4 (actually a very nice, clean machine; love the titanium case!) to a Toshiba tablet. Very cool system. However, it involved a bit of work because the tablet doesn’t like Mac’s long file names. So I had to burn her files to a CD and will inform her tomorrow that she’s more than welcome to work with them off the CD.

On a good note, I had a very cool meeting after work with John Murden and Jonah Holland about an upcoming project we hope to launch in a week or two.  ;)  Very similar to the various other RVA community blog sites out there yet for a specific location.  Looking forward to working on that!

That’s it for today.

All in all, I’m actually looking forward to working with the faculty at work.  I think I was caught blindsided today but will strive to do better tomorrow and the next day and beyond.

Onwards and upwards!
