“Stuck in the Middle With You”…
Sometimes I feel like I’m “Stuck in the Middle With You” when it comes to work.
As you may know, we recently moved from Staunton back to Richmond. In Staunton, I was the Director of Technology for a very small private boarding/day school, Stuart Hall. I literally was “technology.” I handled everything related to technology (and many times, not even) from changing the toner in the printers to stocking paper to building servers to maintaining the school’s website.
Stuart Hall is owned by a large organization, Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia. St. Catherine’s (where I currently work in Richmond) is also owned by CSDV.
I was heavily recruited to work at Stuart Hall because (my theory) they simply couldn’t find the right person to fulfill that job who wouldn’t go nuts (I came close a few times). I worked there for two years and decided it was time for a change. So the opportunity to work for St. Catherine’s came up and I took it, mainly so we could be closer to Matt, Mackenzie and Lee.
A certain individual who holds a very high position with CSDV recruited me for Stuart Hall. He’s served as, pretty much, my guardian angel and, certainly, a mentor of mine. This is a gentleman I respect very much and, on rare occasion, would contact for advice on working with the Administration, etc.
This gentleman, on a from time-to-time basis, will serve as interim business manager for the various schools and/or help out with any business office-related duties (there are actually six schools across the state in CSDV; let’s just say it’s, easily, a “several upon several” million dollar entity) so his roles and responsibilities are nothing to sneeze at nor think lightly of.
He’s currently working very closely with St. Catherine’s and has tasked me into taking on a specific project which, apparently, is beyond the scope of the Technology department’s current agenda. I’ve, unfortunately, am currently stuck in the middle between the department’s priorities and this individual. However, fortunately, after a conversation today with our interim Director, the head of the school has agreed that this project should be postponed so that we, the Technology department, may focus on our priorities.
I’m thankful for her decision yet a bit concerned as I realize that I probably have lost some faith from this individual, however, on the flip side, I hope that he realizes that I am no longer a “one person shop” and that I do have others to answer to now.
I guess time will tell if he treats me any differently. One of the prices to pay for the cause of “doing business.” ![]()
