Request for Input - RVA Italian Delis and Bakeries?
Howdy all! I have a good friend coming in to town in a few weeks who’s Italian and has offered to make us an Italian dinner, from scratch, with all the trimmings. Caveat is I’m searching for any Italian delis throughout the Richmond area. I’ve lived here before years ago for several years and just moved back to the area about five months ago and haven’t really yet “ventured out” so to speak. Hoping to change that soon, of course.
So, that being said, if anyone knows of a good Italian deli where one can pick up regatta cheese, etc., I’d appreciate any and all comments!
Also, if one knows of any Italian bakeries, I’d appreciate the same input!
I may actually say the hell with it and just go to Mamma Zu’s.
Thx much, in advance, all!

Go to 8 1/2 on Strawberry St. That is Mamma Zu’s take out and deli store. Outstanding.
Also try Coppola’s Deli in Carytown and Metro Bakery (before Feb. 5) for the Italian Peasant Bread. Your friend will think they are back home.
River City Cellars in Carytown isn’t Italian, but they have a good selection of cheese. Belmont Butchery is my suggestion for soprasetta or any cured meats. Also, you might try Joe’s Market at Libbie and Grove for specialty items. Being part Italian and from Pittsburgh where there’s a huge selection of Italian goods, I’m always on the lookout for a good bakery or deli and haven’t found one that matches up to the ‘Burgh yet!
If you want to take your friend for great gelato, I’d hit DeLuca Gelato in Gayton Crossing.
Thank you so much for your replies, Jon and Megan. I greatly appreciate it!
I’ve heard awesome things about Mamma Zu’s, Jon, and didn’t realize that they have a deli store too! Someone else on Twitter mentioned Coppola’s so I’ll be sure to check them out too. Sadly, I may miss the Metro Bakery closing, however.
Megan, my friend is part Italian and from New Jersey so your reply really encourages me as well! I’m originally from eastern PA although I don’t remember the Italian delis up there. Been a while since I’ve lived there! If you find anything that matches the ‘Burgh, please let me know.
Appreciate it again, both of you!
