Let’s See…What Do I Want to do?

I’ve been asking myself this question lately, especially after the “big news.” (Note to reader: this may be one of those posts that sounds a bit conceited or pompous. Truly not the case. I’m merely throwing out my thoughts in an analytical method. I’m a nut like that! :D) I know off the top of my head that there are a few things I’d like to do/accomplish. They include (and not necessarily in this order):

  • Getting myself a new bike - I have a 15 year old Trek 950 which is in pretty sad shape. When I was in high school, I thought nothing of riding, literally, 70+ miles a day over the summers. True fact, especially since I had a bike computer that the shop had calibrated for me. Then, I got hit by a car when riding to Dad & Lindas’ farm to tell a nearby girl I had fallen for her and to ask her if she’d go out w/ me. (They say love hurts. I guess it truly did in this case!). After that, I just didn’t pick up riding like I used to. Sure, I rode quite a bit when I was in the Navy and stationed in Norfolk. Used to ride between Norfolk and Virginia Beach all the time. But it was just never the same. Then I pretty much gave it up after that.

So, that being said, I’ve had my eye on a Cannondale Bad Boy (love the bike; hate the name!) for some time now. No suspension on it but since I’m not a total mountain bike nut and will probably use it more in an urban environment with a bit of trail riding, I think it would work out nicely. Planning on saving my pennies up whether it’s for the Cannondale or a Gary Fisher that a good friend of mine is highly recommending.

Oh, and I have the car, now, to match it: a 2003 Subaru Forester! Just need to get the bike components for the factory rack and I’ll be good to go.

  • More hiking - This one is a no-brainer that I can do now, of course. In fact, I’ve been trying to do this more often but, lately, time hasn’t really been on my side w/ watching the kids and all. Please don’t get me wrong; I enjoy watching and being w/ the kids! Fortunately, I have discovered that the little ones actually ENJOY hiking!! No, we’re not scaling rocks at Humpback no pounding 10+ mile hikes. We’ve discovered Pocohantas State Park in Chester, just about our backyard and had a blast there last weekend finding out about the 50+ miles of trails they have there. Took all four kids to do that one and we came home a bit weary but very thankful for that resource!

There’s a trail in the Shenandoah Valley I’d like to hit again. Did that before moving from Staunton and enjoyed it so much, I’ll go back. However, now, unfortunately, it’s about 2.5 hours away but would be, oh, so worth it. This leads me into the next “what I want to do” topic which is…

  • Camping - Yep, camping. Did this all the time when I was younger. Lately have been perusing the Campmor and Cabela’s sites to see what kind of deals they have. And since I’m a very analytical person (”Noooo!!”), I always tend to over analyze everything, i.e. does this sleeping bag fabric scent repel bears and goats, etc. May have to put this one on hold for a bit as I think I’d be more enjoyment out of the bike initially, especially since I could hook a trailer up to it and pull the little ones. :)
  • A cabin on some remote land - Yep, seriously. I’ve actualy been thinking about buying some land in the next few years up in the Valley and sitting on it for a while as an investment and eventual little getaway. Since I live on campus for free, I think that would be worthy of pursuing. Even have an idea of what kind of cabin I’d look into!

Alrighty, that’s it for now. Gonna get the kids up and see if we can head to church for the early service. Will post more later.

Y’all have a good one!

  1. Kory, I would like to do more bike riding and hiking also. Give me a call and I will go. Camping not so much due to time constraints.

    Thanks,
    Scott

  2. Absolutely, Scott! Planning on really getting back into the hiking thing as soon as the weather figures out what it wants to do.

I need to look into camping gear anyway so probably wouldn’t be doing that until at least the spring/summertime anyway.

  3. [...] need to do to run the site remotely.  I just think it would be the coolest thing to have my little cabin eventually with a high-speed ‘Net connection and my unlimited Verizon cell phone plan, [...]
