Got the hiking bug again…

I had a good time spending the day w/ the kids yesterday. We played at the playground on campus for about an hour then spent another 30 minutes sitting on the back porch’s rocking chairs before it got dark. Simply a gorgeous day here in Richmond yesterday. Today looks to be lining up as another beautiful day.

VA Beach renderingSha’s going on day #2 of spending time with a good friend of hers. Today, they’re going to the beach. Sha used to live there years ago and realizes that it’s just not going to be the same as it was. It probably now looks the same as this rendering. :) I actually haven’t been down there for at least four or five years so I really wouldn’t know what to expect either.

Hiking in the ValleyPersonally, I’d rather head back towards Staunton and the Shenandoah Valley to get some hiking in. I’m still running three days a week (up to three miles a day now!) and working out three days a week (the non-running days), so I’m keeping in shape to, hopefully, do an all day hike. To me, there’s just nothing like being on top of a mountain, soaking in the serenity and solitude of the landscape and feeling good about myself having made it up 4,000 to 5,000 feet of mountain. One of my favorite hikes is the path to Elliot Knob towards West Virginia on the northside of Staunton. Lots of pictures on our public Picasa site here. (I should probably take some time to organize that area. Kind of a PITA, though! :D )

I’d love to get a new digital camera (ours died several months ago. It was “only” five years old!) to take with me. I asked Sha if she’d mind me taking a day pretty soon to head up there and go on an all-day hike. Matt hikeThinking of taking Matt with me if he’d like to go. We haven’t had much time to ourselves since moving back to Richmond and he’s old enough now that I think he’d keep up.

Nothing like packing some granola mix (still need to make a batch from the awesome recipe I got from mogrify!), filling up the water bottles and heading out for an all-day excursion. When the other kids are a bit older, I hope to get a couple of tents and take them on an overnight trip.  There’s an awesome spot near Crabtree Falls that would be ideal.

Nice to think about this type of stuff.

  1. Crabtree Falls is great. Have you ever hiked Old Rag Mountain? It’s a good hike - has a little technical rock scramble.

  2. Yep, did that one once when we lived up there. Awesome hike! I’d love to take the older kids on that sometime. Thx for commenting, Eric!

  3. [...] I’m planning a hiking outage the weekend of October 13th, perhaps, since I have the bug and all.  Getting to be really nice out there for hiking with the temperature and with the [...]
