Getting stuff in order… (budget tools)

Well, I’ve been wanting to do this for some time now.  Have all the tools to do it but didn’t have the time…until now. :)

No, I’m not talking about building an arc.  I’m taking about organizing the household finances.  Sha’s always been the run to the household budget but now it’s my turn.  Fortunately, I use Bank of America (I know, I’m sure I’ll hear various reasons on why I shouldn’t “sell out” to a corporate bank but I don’t care.) and they offer awesome online budgeting/tracking/etc. applications.  Really a good choice for self-defined geeks, IMHO.  So, there’s my true data.

Now, since they do offer all those awesome tools which are extremely detailed, comprehensive and informative, it’s a bit of overkill for the day-to-day money tracking.  So I’ve actually imported a very simple Excel spreadsheet file into my Google Docs area which I use to quickly add grocery store, fuel, etc. trips.  Seems to be working fine.  However I think I need to fine tune the spreadsheet a bit because I’d like to allow categorized entries by date instead of just adding on to the overall category every time I make a purchase.  I’ll probably work on that tonight when the kids are in bed.

I have a few people who have been very generous to me over the years I’d like to pay back.  This will be a good way to start tracking everything and making sure I can do that.

Ironically, I’m actually looking forward to budgeting.  Maybe it’s because when I was in high school, I had thought about being an accountant.  :)

Y’all have a good one!

  1. mint.com is pretty cool. I’ve been using it since December. The best part is it automatically downloads transactions from your banks and credit cards.

  2. Wow, Ross. Thx much. Signed up at Mint this evening and have been messing w/ the budget aspects. Might be a better way of keeping track versus manual Google Docs maintenance.

  3. The budget portion could be a lot stronger for sure. But there is no way I have the discipline to enter every transaction I make.
